Ecological Engineering and ecological design:
Challenge for greening urban areas

The role of ecological engineering
on different levels of scale

First Announcement - Call for Papers

A 1,5  day international workshop (+ 1 day optional excursion) will be held in the Waternet building, Amsterdam or in one of the meeting rooms of the Free University of Amsterdam (both locations are in the southern part of Amsterdam), The Netherlands, in order

  1. to promote application of ecological engineering in urban areas on the basis of ecosystem thinking
  2. to improve contacts and cooperation between ecologists, eco-engineers and other disciplines.

with the aim of bridging between ecology and civil engineering and working on the text of a practical guide of ecological engineering.

During the afternoon of the 2nd and the full day of the 3rd of September 2010  key-note speakers will give their presentations (invited prof. William J. Mitsch, dr. Johannes Heeb,  ir. Ruud Kampf, ir. Marc Ottelé, dr. H. van Bohemen, p.m.) and during working sessions we will after some short introductories (5 minutes) by participants work on papers about:

  1. the living building concept (p.m.)
  2. ecosystem functioning, ecosystem goods and ecosystem services (p.m.)
  3. building with nature, the use of natural dynamics of ecosystems to create flexible and sustainable infrastructure while enhancing ecological values (p.m.)
  4. green façades (M.Ottelé/Nicole Pfoser) and green roofs (p.m.) including indoor- and outdoor air quality enhancement with bio-filtration (p.m.)
  5. green infrastructure for humans and wildlife in the urban environment (from green bridges till high rise ecological infrastructure), as well as the watergarland approach (p.m.)
  6. drinking water, run-off water, urban sanitation and waste water recycling, waterharmonica, sustainable urban aquaculture, an integrated approach (Johannes Heeb/Petter Jenssen/Andrew Dakers/Ruud Kampf)
  7. policymaking: processes for sustainable urban areas (Ellen van Bueren)
  8. multifunctional landscape perspectives and integration on local level, illustrated by short rotation plantation, urban agriculture, vertical farming, sustainable use of (biologically grown) materials in the form of integrated bio-systems (Anja Bruell/Grit Bürgow)
  9. an ecological aesthetic in urban architecture (p.m.)

The results of the presentations and discussions will lead to a practical guide (“An Introduction to Ecological Engineering”) about 40 pages showing the wide range of ecological engineering for low carbon, ecological valuable and socially liveable and healthy urban areas in which the building envelope can play a crucial role and will show how ecological engineering can be applied in urban and suburban areas.
The working basis for the practical guide will be the THINK PIECE OF ECOLOGICAL ENGINEERING of  IEES (Ken Gnanakan).

Input: Thinkpiece of ecological engineering, paper benefits of ecological engineering, paper ecosystem       thinking, keynote papers, selected papers from  individual participants.
Output:  Blueprint for worldwide application of ecological engineering and a text for publication of a             practical guide about ecological engineering.

On the evening of Friday the 3th September 2010 we will have a meeting of the IEES; everybody is invited to attend (and we can have a meal together).

We will organise the 1,5 day workshop on a low budget basis (65 Euros, including lunch on Friday, coffee and tea on Thursday and Friday, plus 35 Euros if you are interested in joining us in the excursion on Saturday the 4th September 2010). As it will be a real working event, we expect to have 25 real interested people (if more people like to attend we can handle 50/60 people). Everybody is responsible for his own travel costs, board and lodging, but there is enough space in Amsterdam.

If you are interested to participate and to contribute please fill in the form below (make a copy, fill it in and email it to h.bohemen@kpnplanet.nl)
A detailed program will be distributed in April 2010.

Dr. Hein van Bohemen (lecturer ecological engineering), chairman organising committee in cooperation with ir. Ruud Kampf (researcher ecological engineering at Waternet).
Correspondence to be sent to h.bohemen@kpnplanet.nl.
