Swimming pool Mercatorplein Amsterdam
architect: Ton Venhoeven

covered by a Wonderwall of Copijn, Utrecht

The inside swimming pool Mercator lays as a green hill in the city. Covered by a green roof and green walls it gives home to more than 50 different plants. The building changes during the year, from sringtime to summer, autumn and winter. It gives a incredible feeling of nature in the dense city, but nevertheless it is a building with all the functions a inside swimming pool with the different recreative facilities nowadays has to offer for being attractive.

The building is covered by the so called 'Wonderwall'. This method of planting makes green spaces in urban areas a feasible alternative. As the available space for greenery in cities dwindles, roof gardens and wall gardens are increasingly used as solutions to keep the living environment green. The Wonderwall enlivens the aesthetic quality of the surroundings, enriches the atmosphere (acoustics) and improves the local climate (dust filtering).

The Wonderwall is a patented product by Copijn and is a registered trade name. On demand Copijn can design and construct roof gardens and

walls. Copijn offers a 10-year warranty on the living wall system as well as a growth warranty on the plants, provided long-term maintenance is also carried out by Copijn. The Wonderwall meets the Dutch prevailing fire-resistance requirements.
The Wonderwall as a system has several advantages:
· At approx. 100 kg/m2, the structure is relatively light.
· 50 plant species encompass an extensive visual range and cover the wall’s surface.
· It can be used in combination with almost any kind of wall, both indoors and outdoors.
· Due to the relatively large ‘leaf surface index’, the plants capture ‘harmful’ coarse and fine dust in urban areas.
