The interior court in Vienna’s fifth district is characterised by fragments of buildings erected prior to the 1860s – interspersed with lower, renovated Biedermeier structures – amidst the higher, turn-of-the century residential buildings. The mural on the firewall of the adjoining house, by a student of Max Weiler, bears testimony to a former artists’ colony. This court had recently been restructured (appraised and subdivided), resulting in new row houses, an atypical typology in Vienna’s inner districts. Although the court itself is common property, the question of private use at one’s own doorstep arose. This design of the open space was proportional to one of the units which surround the common court – one seventh of the overall area.
